Captains Take the Series With the 6-5 Victory

(Dayton, OH) - Luis Dejesus earned his first win of the season, and the Captains (20-34) defeated Dayton (24-33) by a final of 6-5. Dejesus (1-6) pitched six innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs. Dejesus did not allow a walk and struck out one. Luis Morel earned his first save for the Captains by pitching the final three innings. The Captains won the four game series against Dayton.

Lake County lit up the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Logan Vick singled and Joe Sever walked. Anthony Santander singled home Vick and moved Sever to third base. Santander stole second base. Both runners scored on a base hit from Eric Haase. Lake County was ahead 3-0. In the second inning, with one out, Erik Gonzalez tripled to the gap in right center. Dorssys Paulino hit a sacrifice fly and the Captains led the game 4-0 after two.

Dayton got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Joe Winker led off the inning with a lazer shot down the right field line. The baseball barely eluded the wall and was a homerun. It was the eighth homer of the season for winker and the 14th that Dejesus has served up this season. Lake County still led 4-1.

Lake County made it a 5-1 game when Anthony Santander doubled and scored on a Leonardo Castillo single in the sixth. In the bottom half, Dayton got the run back. With one out, Joe Terry singled and eventually scored on a base hit by Jeff Gelalich. The score was 5-2 Captains.

The Captains made the score 6-2 in the seventh. Paulino reached on a two base error and scored on a single by Logan Vick. Dayton responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and two runners in scoring position, Beau Amaral doubled home two runs and the score was 6-4. In the eighth it became 6-5 when Tanner Rahier grounded out and another runner touched home plate. The score was 6-5 Captains headed to the ninth. That was the final.

The Dragons sent RHP Nick Travieso (0-1) to the hill to start the game. Travieso pitched four innings, allowed six hits, four earned runs, and one walk. Travieso is the 6th overall prospect in the Reds organization. He was making his Mid West League debut. Travieso took the loss. The Dragons used three relief pitches and limited the Captains to two runs over the final six innings.

The Captains will enjoy an off day on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Lake County will be on the road for a four game series (in three days) with the South Bend Silver Hawks. Lake County will send LHP Ryan Merritt (3-4, 3.11) to the mound to start the ballgame. South Bend will counter with LHP Daniel Watts (7-2, 3.45). First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
