Lake County Captains Unveil 2013 Roster

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains, the Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, have announced their 2013 Opening Day roster and it will include nine players who have previously spent time on the Captains roster.  The Captains open the 2013 season at Classic Park versus the Lansing Lugnuts, an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, on Thursday at 6:30 PM. 

The Captains will carry a thirteen man pitching staff which is comprised of five pitchers who pitched for the Captains at some point last season.  The starting rotation will include three starters that pitched for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers last season.  They include LHP Ryan Merritt (3-4, 4.09) the only left handed pitcher on the entire pitching staff, NY-Penn League All Star RHP Luis Dejesus (4-2, 2.02), who also made four appearances with the Captains last year, and RHP Jake Sisco (1-6, 5.03).  The starting staff will also include RHP Mitch Brown (2-0, 3.58), the Indians #2 selection in the 2012 draft and RHP Dylan Baker (0-1, 4.13) the Indians 5th round selection in the 2012 draft.  Both pitched for the AZL Indians last season.  

Four former Captains will be coming out of the bullpen.  RHP Louis Head (2-0, 3.78), RHP Nick Pasquale (3-0, 2.17), both joined the Captains last year having come out of the 2012 draft.   RHP Francisco Valera (6-3, 5.35) spent the entire 2012 season with Captains and RHP Felix Sterling (4-8, 6.58) has spent parts of the last two seasons in Lake County.  RHP Steve Peoples (1-1, 2.28), RHP Jack Wagoner (3-5 4.36) and RHP Josh Martin (4-1, 4.14) all pitched for Mahoning Valley last year while RHP Luis Morel (1-1, 3.07) hurled for the AZL Indians.

Both of the Captains catchers will be making their Lake County debuts in 2013.  Eric Haase (.282, 3 HR, 22 RBI) spent the majority of last season with the AZL Indians before closing out the season at Mahoning Valley.  Haase was a 7th round selection in 2011.  Martin Cervenka (.240, 0 HR, 12 RBI) is a Prague, Czech Republic native and has spent the last two seasons with the AZL Indians.    

The Captains infield will have two familiar faces as 3B Leonardo Castillo (.216, 4 HR, 48 RBI) returns after playing116 games with the Captains last season.  Castillo hit .250 in the second half of the season after hitting only .186 in the first half.   2B Robel Garcia started the season with the Captains and played the second half of the season with Mahoning Valley.  He hit a combined .217, 3HR, 39 RBI on the season.  Dorssys Paulino (.333, 7 HR, 38 RBI) will take over at SS from the Indians top prospect Francisco Lindor.  Paulino is rated as the second best prospect in the Indians organization behind Lindor according to Baseball America.  Joe Sever (.274, 1 HR, 20 RBI) played 2B and 3B at Mahoning Valley in 2012 where he was a NY-Penn League All Star.  Erik Gonzalez (.220, 2 HR, 18 RBI) split time between 1B and 3B at Mahoning Valley last season and 1B Nelson Rodriguez (.229, 4HR, 17 RBI) spent 2012 with the AZL Indians. 

The outfield will see former Captains LeVon Washington and Luigi Rodriguez (.268, 11 HR, 48 RBI) returning to Lake County.  Washington, the Indians 2nd round pick in 2010, started the season with the Captains and played in only six games before an injury caused him to miss the majority of the season.  He was able to play four games with Carolina before the season concluded.  Logan Vick (.181. 0 HR, 3 RBI) patrolled the outfield for Mahoning Valley in 2012 and the Captains other outfielder Jorge Martinez (.347, 7 HR, 39 RBI) played the majority of the season with the AZL Indians before playing his final eight games of the season at Mahoning Valley. 

Scooter Tucker will manage the team replacing David Wallace who spent just the 2012 season with the club.  Tucker will be joined by Pitching Coach Steve Karsay and Hitting Coach Tony Mansolino who are also in their first season at Lake County.
