Lansing Levels Captains 9-2

(Lansing, MI) - Chris Schaffer hit a three run double and a two run homerun as The Lansing Lugnuts (35-32, 82-54) defeated the Lake County Captains (39-30, 70-68) by a final of 9-2. Lansing used a four run second inning to spark the victory. Besides Schaffer's double, there were two errors on Leonardo Castillo, which plated Schaffer from second, and Lansing led the game 4-2.

Lake County scored first. In the top of the second inning, Alex Lavisky hit a groundball that scored a run and Leonardo Castillo hit a sacrifice fly and the Captains were leading 2-0.

In the fourth, Lansing added a run. Chris Peters doubled, and was sacrificed to third base. A Wild pitch scored him and it was 5-2 Lugnuts. Lansing tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Nick Baligod singled and scored on the Gustavo Pierre triple and the score was 6-2. Pierre scored on a sacrifice fly by Shane Opitz and it was a 7-2 game.

In the eighth inning, Chris Peters singled with one out. With two outs, Chris Schaffer hit a deep flyball to left field, the baseball carried over the wall for a two run homerun. The homer was the second of the season for Schaffer and he knocked in two more RBIs. Schaffer finished with five runs batted in. The score was 9-2 Lansing.

LHP Elvis Araujo (7-10) started the game for the Captains and took the loss. Araujo pitched five innings surrendering four hits, and five runs. Four of the five runs were earned. Araujo walked one and fanned five. The score was 5-2 when Elvis left the building. Joshua Nervis pitched three innings and allowed four runs. Nervis allowed the two run homer to Schaffer.

RHP Anthony DeSclafani (11-3) got the nod for the Lugnuts and earned the win. DeSclafani pitched five innings allowing two earned runs one walk and three strikeouts. The Lugnuts bullpen pitched four innings of three hit scoreless baseball to preserve the win.

On Monday, The Captains will remain on the road to conclude the 2012 season. The Captains will send RHP Cody Anderson (4-7, 3.20) to the mound to face the RHP Kramer Champlin (4-1, 4.28) for Lansing. First Pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
