Loons Sweep Double Dip from Captains

(Midland, MI) - The Great Lakes Loons (8-7) swept the Lake County Captains (5-11) in the double header on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. The Loons won game one 1-0. Great Lakes prevailed in game two 2-1.

Game One was in a scoreless tie headed to the bottom of the seventh inning. Corey Seager had a single and was then sacrificed to second base. Jeremy Rathjen singled to left field and Seager motored around from second base to score the game winner. The Loons took game one 1-0.

In Game one there was just five hits per team. Lake County saw Joe Sever hit a double, Luigi Rodriguez, Leonardo Castillo, Eric Haase and Logan Vick all get singles. Great Lakes had Tyler Ogle single, Jesus Valadez get a base hit, and Corey Segar hit a Triple and single. The game winner was a single by Jeremy Rathjen in the bottom of the seventh.

In Game two, a pair of unearned runs did in the Captains. In the second inning, the Loons scored first. After two singles and an error, which moved runners to second and third, a sac fly by Deshenko Ricardo made the score 1-0 Great Lakes. Great Lakes scored again in the bottom of the fifth inning when James Baldwin had a bunt single and forced a bad throw. The two base error put Baldwin on third with no one out. Malcolm Holland singled up the middle and the score was 2-0 Loons.

The Captains got on the board when Luigi Rodriguez and Dorssys Paulino worked walks in the top of the sixth. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position and Nellie Rodriguz grounded out to first. Luigi scored from third and it was 2-1 Loons. Martin Cervenka got the only hit for the Captains which was a single.

In Game One, RHP Jake Sisco (0-2) got the ball for the Captains and took the tough loss. Sisco went all seven innings, allowing just five hits one earned run and he struck out five. Sisco gave up two hits in an inning one time, it was the seventh inning when the Loons won the game.

In Game two, the Captains turned to RHP Dylan Baker (0-2) to start the game.  Baker took the loss. He pitched six innings, scattered seven hits and allowed two unearned runs. He fanned six.

For the Loons in Game One, RHP Jharel Cotton (1-1) got the start for, and got the win. Cotton pitched all seven innings and allowed five hits, one walk with six strikeouts. He did not allow a run and won 1-0.

Great Lakes gave the ball to RHP Ralston Cash (2-0) to start Game two. Cash allowed one earned run over five innings. He struck out eight and walked four. Scott Griggs earned his third save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh.

The Captains will head to Comstock Park, MI to open a three game series vs. the West Michigan Whitecaps. Lake County will start RHP Luis Dejesus (0-1, 4.80) and the Whitecaps will counter with RHP Edgar De La Rosa (1-0, 5.87). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Monday Night.
