Rodriguez's Late Homer Pushes Captains Past Whitecaps

(Eastlake, OH)- Nellie Rodriguez scorched his 19th home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Captains went on to beat West Michigan 3-2. The homer, a solo shot from Rodriguez, was deposited into the bleachers in left field. The win snapped a three game losing streak for Lake County.

Lake County scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Captains sent eight men to the plate and used five hits, and one walk to plate two runs. The two RBI's went to Grant Fink and Brian Ruiz. The score was 2-0 Lake County.

West Michigan scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and tied the ballgame. The Whitecaps used two hits, a walk, a wild pitch, and two stolen bases along with an error to plate the two runs. The RBI in the inning went to Dominic Ficociello. After seven innings, the score was evened at 2-2.

LHP Luis Lugo (5-9) started the ballgame for Lake County and did not earn a decision. Lugo pitched six and two thirds innings and allowed three hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts. RHP Justin Brantley (3-0) pitched two and one third innings of scoreless baseball to earn the win.

RHP Jonathan Crawford (6-3) started game two for West Michigan and didn't get a decision. Crawford pitched three and two thirds innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, four walks and two strikeouts. The Whitecaps used two pitchers out of the bullpen and the loss went to Zac Reininger (2-2) after he allowed the late homer to Rodriguez.

The Captains will conclude a six-game home stand on Wednesday. West Michigan will be in town for the finale of three ballgames. On Wednesday, the Captains will start RHP Mitch Brown (4-8, 3.96) and the Whitecaps will counter with RHP Matt Davenport (5-2, 2.56). First pitch will be at 1:00 Pm from Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
