Sever Powers Captains Past Loons 5-4

(Midland, MI) - Joe Sever blasted his seventh homerun of the season in the top of the eighth inning to give the Captains (17-18) the 5-4 win over Great Lakes (22-14) on Sunday. Sever, also doubled in the game and knocked in his team leading 45th RBI.

Great Lakes scored first. In the bottom of the second inning, James Baldwin singled and stole second and third base. Brandon Dixon hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Baldwin scored. The score was 1-0.

Lake County took the lead in the top of the third inning, when Jorge Martinez walked and was singed to second base by LeVon Washington. Dorssys Paulino hit a fielder's choice and the throw to second base to try to get the force out went into center field. Martinez scored and Washington made it to third base. Logan Vick then hit into a double play and Washington scored and Lake County led 2-1.

In the top of the fourth inning, Todd Hankins reached on a error and stole second base. With two outs, Martinez singled home Hankins and the score was 3-1. LeVon Washington tripled to center field and Martinez scored. Lake County led 4-1.

Great Lakes tied the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning. James Baldwin doubled and stole third base. Brandon Dixon walked and there were runners at the corners with two outs. Jose Cappellan singled home Baldwin and the score was 4-3. Robbie Garvey doubled home Dixon and the game was tied at 4-4, until Sever untied it with one swing in the eighth.

RHP Robbie Aviles (3-3) started the game for Lake County and did not get a decision. Aviles pitched three innings and allowed two hits and one earned run. Aviles walked one. Jimmy Stokes pitched two innings of relief and allowed one hit, one earned run and four walks. Jack Wagoner (3-5) got the win after pitching two innings and allowing three hits and two earned runs. Wagoner walked one and fanned two. Grant Sides earned his third save of the season after pitching two innings on allowing two hits, and two walks with three strikeouts.

Great Lakes sent RHP Chris Anderson (2-0) to the mound to start the game and he did not factor in the decision. Anderson lasted four innings and allowed four hits, to unearned runs on two walks and three strikeouts. The bullpen for the Loons pitched five innings of relief and allowed just one run on one hit, the problem was that the one hit left the ballpark. The loss went to Crayton Bare (0-1).

The Captains will be back in action on Monday Night in Midland, MI to take on the Great Lakes Loons in the third and final game of the series. The Captains will start RHP Luis Dejesus (4-10, 6.45) and Great Lakes will counter with LHP Tom Windle (2-0, 1.88). First Pitch is at 7:05 PM from Dow Diamond.
