Silver Hawks Big Eighth Inning Sinks Captains

(Eastlake, OH) - South Bend (32-22) scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning and defeated the Captains (27-26) 4-3. In the eighth inning, with one out Michael Perez singled and so did Pedro Ruiz and that was it for Captains Pitcher Jimmy Stokes. Anderson Polanco came on and allowed a single to load the bases and then walked in two runs and the score was 3-2. After another pitching change and an error on the Captains, the Hawks had the 4-3 lead. That was the final. The loss snapped the Captains five game-winning streak.

Lake County scored twice in the third inning and took the early lead 2-0. In the inning, the Captains used three hits including an RBI single from Jeremy Lucas. Lucas has now hit in six straight games. The second run came into score after an error, and the Captains led by a pair.

The Captains tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jorge Martinez doubled to begin the inning. Martinez moved to third base on a single by Cody Ferrell. That was his first hit as a Captain. Martinez scored on the same play when the ball was bobbled in centerfield. The Hawks second error of the night gave the Captains the 3-0 lead.

RHP Dylan Baker (7-6) started the game for Lake County and did not get a decision. Baker pitched six innings and allowed two hits, one walk and he struck out seven. Jimmy Stokes entered in relief and pitched one and one third inning and allowed two earned runs on three hits and he struck out three. Anderson Polanco (0-1) allowed one hit and walked in two runs and did not retire a batter Polanco allowed two earned runs and took the loss. Grant Sides pitched one and two thirds innings and struck out two.

RHP Rob Coe (3-1) got the ball for South Bend and did not get a decision. Coe pitched six innings and allowed eight hits, three runs, two were earned, He did not walk anyone and fanned six. The Silver Hawks used three relief pitchers. The win went to Thomas Brendel (5-1). Brendel pitched one inning and struck out one. Jimmie Sherfy earned his first save of the season.

The Captains will travel to Lansing, Michigan on Saturday to take on the Lansing Lugnuts in game one of a four game series. The Captains will send RHP Robbie Aviles (3-3, 3.70) to the mound to start the ballgame and the Lugnuts will counter with RHP Kendall Graveman (0-1, 3.98). First Pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM from Cooley Law School Stadium.
