West Michigan Sweeps DH from Lake County

(Comstock Park, MI)- West Michigan won game one on Sunday 3-2 and swept the double header from the Captains in the night cap by a final of 4-3. West Michigan now has won the first three games of the four game set and has a commanding 9-2 lead in the season series. The Captains are one game away from being eliminated from playoff contention.

In game one, the Captains trailed 1-0 after Danry Vazquez homered in the top of the first inning. West Michigan added on in the fourth inning when Lance Durham connected with a solo shot to right field and the score was 2-0 Whitecaps. Lake County tied the game in the fifth inning with four straight hits, capped by an RBI double from Jorge Martinez. In the top of the eighth inning, Raph Rhymes doubled and scored on a single from Jeff Holm to give the Whitecaps a 3-2 lead. That was the final.

In game two, a scheduled seven inning ballgame, the Captains fell to the Whitecaps by a final of 4-3. Lake County took the early 1-0 lead when Richard Stock and Jorge Martinez led off the second inning with walks. A wild pitch moved Stock and Martinez into scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Leonardo Castillo let the Captains take the early lead. West Michigan answered back in the bottom of the second inning. Connor Harrell tripled and scored on a ground out by Holm. The score was evened at 1-1. Lance Durham walked with two outs, and moved to second on a wild pitch. David Gonzalez then singled to right field and Durham came across home plate to make the score 2-1 Whitecaps.

West Michigan took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Jared Reaves reached on a fielder's choice and motored around to score from first base to give the Whitecaps the two run advantage. The Captains tied the score in the top of the fifth inning. Zack MacPhee and Leo Castillo led off with back-to-back singles and MacPhee scored on a wild pitch. On the same play, Castillo went to second base. Yhoxian Medina blooped a single down the right field line and Castillo scored to tie the ballgame at 3-3.

The Whitecaps won game tow in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two on and one out, Jared Reaves singled to right field and Lance Durham scored the winning run. West Michigan won the game by a final of 4-3 and swept the double header from Lake County.

RHP Jake Sisco (4-11) started the game one for Lake County and did not get a decision. Sisco just lasted one inning and allowed two hits, one earned run, one walk and one strikeout. Luis Morel pitched six and one thirds innings in relief and took the loss. Morel allowed three hits, two earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Jack Wagoner pitched one and two thirds innings and allow three hits but did not allow a run.

RHP Endrys Briceno started game one for the Whitecaps and just lasted one third of an inning. Briceno walked one, and allowed one hit. Four pitchers for West Michigan combined to throw eight innings of relief. Jake Thompson pitched five and two thirds innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts. The win went to Chad Smith his fourth of the season.

The Captains threw LHP Luis Lugo (0-0) in game two. Lugo pitched four and one third innings and allowed seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Lugo did not get a decision. Jimmy Stokes pitched one and two thirds and allowed one hit. Anderson Polanco (1-2) got the loss. Polanco allowed one earned run on one hit, three walks and struck out two. Cody Penny pitched the final two thirds of an inning.

In game two, West Michigan started Calvin Drummond. Drummond (2-2) did not get a decision. He pitched four innings and allowed one earned run one two walks and eight strikeouts. Drummond did not allow a hit. The win went to Josh Turley (8-3) who pitched one inning in relief and allowed one hit and fanned one.

The Captains will remain in Comstock Park, MI fro the finale of the series on Monday Night. Lake County will start RHP Dylan Baker (7-6, 3.73) and West Michigan will counter with Endrys Briceno (7-9, 4.72). First pitch is at 7:00 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark.
