Whitecaps Escape With 5-4 Win

(Eastlake, OH)- Raph Rhymes smacked a bases clearing double to extend the lead as the Whitecaps went on to beat the Captains 5-4 on Monday. With the bases loaded and two men out Rhymes lined a two bagger down the left field line to score three runs and give West Michigan the 4-0 lead. The Captains have lost three straight games.

West Michigan took the lead in the top half of the first inning. With two outs, Raph Rhymes walked and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Dominic Ficociello singled home Rhymes and the score was 1-0 West Michigan.

Lake County scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead in half. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Dorssys Paulino hit a sacrifice fly to right field and the score was 4-1. With runners on the corners, Torsten Boss knocked in another run with a ground out and the score was 4-2 West Michigan through three innings.

West Michigan tacked on an insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Dominic Ficociello singled home Andy Dirks, who led off with a double, and the score was 5-2 Whitecaps.

Lake County scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to one run. Torsten Boss walked and went to second base on a wild pitch. With one out, Claudio Bautista doubled home Boss and the score was 5-3. Bautista scored on a Clint Frazier single and the score was 5-4 West Michigan.

RHP Dace Kime (6-13) started the ballgame for Lake County and took the loss. Kime pitched five innings and allowed six hits, four earned runs, three walks and he fanned two. Kime tossed two wild pitches. Alexis Paredes pitched one and one third innings and allowed two hits, one earned run and one walk. Anderson Polanco pitched one and two thirds innings and allowed two hits and two strikeouts. Trevor Frank pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Captains.

RHP Chad Green (5-4) started game two for West Michigan and earned the win. Green allowed two earned runs on one hit, two walks and he struck out seven. Joe Mantiply pitched one and one third innings of relief and allowed one earned run on one hit. He walked one and struck out three. Julio Felix pitched one and two thirds innings to earn his 12th save of the season.

The Captains will continue a six-game home stand on Tuesday. West Michigan will be in town for the second of three ballgames. On Tuesday, the Captains will start LHP Luis Lugo (5-9, 5.92) and the Whitecaps will counter with RHP Jonathan Crawford (6-3, 3.12). First pitch will be at 7:00 Pm from Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
