Kernels bats go cold in 2-1 loss to Beloit

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Cedar Rapids lineup was quieted in a 2-1 loss to the Beloit Sky Carp on Saturday evening. Wander Javier and Jeferson Morales each had two-hit nights, but the rest of the lineup combined for just three hits and collectively struck out 13 times, going 1-for-8

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Cedar Rapids lineup was quieted in a 2-1 loss to the Beloit Sky Carp on Saturday evening. Wander Javier and Jeferson Morales each had two-hit nights, but the rest of the lineup combined for just three hits and collectively struck out 13 times, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Cedar Rapids falls to 60-41, 17-18 on the season.

Beloit plated their lone two runs on a two-run home run in the second.

Jon Olsen was the first man out of the Cedar Rapids pen’, striking out four over 1.2 scoreless innings of one-hit ball.

Cedar Rapids got on the board in the fourth as Aaron Sabato walked with one away and later scored from second on a Morales RBI single ripped through the left side.

Tyler Palm took over in the sixth, retiring each of the six men he faced with a pair of strikeouts. Hunter McMahon covered the final two frames, putting away six of seven and striking out one.

Down to the Kernels’ final strike with two down in the ninth, Will Holland doubled down the right field line then Mikey Perez was hit by a pitch to put the tying and winning runs on base. Beloit’s centerfielder then made a tremendous sliding catch on a soft fly ball into shallow center to end the game and squash the Cedar Rapids comeback effort.

The series finale is set for 2:05 p.m. CT on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
