Kernels win in extras over Wisconsin

APPLETON, Wisconsin -- The Kernels fought back to win in extra innings over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday. Cedar Rapids won 5-4 in 10 innings, extending its winning streak to four games.

Kernels struck first with another home run, this time DaShawn Keirsey joined the parade with a two-run home run to left field to make it 2-0. The Kernels have hit 16 home runs in this series against the Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin cut the lead in half when Sal Frelick hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning, making it a 2-1 ball game. Then the Timber Rattlers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Kahle hit a two-run home run to left field, giving the Timber Rattlers a 3-2 lead. It was Kahle's third home run of the season. Then later in the inning, Frelick stole home to make it a 4-2 lead.

The Kernels responded in the top of the seventh when Michael Helman hit an RBI triple, making it a 4-3 ball game. Then, Matt Wallner smacked a single to right field, scoring Helman to tie the game 4-4.

It stayed that way through nine innings and the game went into extras. The Kernels took the lead when Keirsey hit a double to left field, scoring pinch-runner Daniel Ozoria and giving the Kernels a 5-4 lead.

Pitcher Andrew Cabezas went out for his third inning of relief and shut the door in the bottom of the 10th, recording his fourth win of the season.

Both teams will meet for the series finale on Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
