Cedar Rapids scored during the fourth inning for a 1-0 advantage. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. led off with a triple before Jair Camargo singled to drive him home.

Jon Olsen, who took a perfect game bid in the third, was vying for a shutout start when the Cubs surged ahead in bottom of the fifth. D.J. Artis lifted a three-run home run to left-center field that gave South Bend its first lead at 3-1.

The Kernels rallied within the seventh and forced a 3-3 tie. Camargo picked up a leadoff walk and advanced on Michael Helman’s single. Max Smith followed with an RBI double, and Daniel Ozoria’s run-scoring groundout tied the game.
