Cedar Rapids, IA – Kernels catcher Pat Winkel blasted a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth, but Cedar Rapids would go on to fall 4-3 in 10 innings to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon. The Kernels settle for a split with the Whitecaps, moving to 44-25 on the season and 1-2 in the second half.

John Stankiewicz threw extremely well for the Kernels in a no-decision, tossing 6.0 innings of one-run ball. He allowed just three hits and walked a pair, striking out two.

West Michigan scored a run in the second as the Kernels bats were silent through the first seven innings, with 21 of the first 22 men to bat being put away. The Whitecaps added a run in the eighth, seemingly putting the game on ice heading to the home half. Wander Javier promptly opened the frame by drawing a walk then Winkel launched his two-run shot off the batters eye in center, drawing the game even at two.

A scoreless ninth sent the game to extra innings, where the Whitecaps plated a pair in the top of the 10th. The Kernels would get a run in the bottom of the tenth thanks to a Dylan Neuse RBI single but would go on to leave the tying run at third.

The Kernels are idle on Monday before opening a six-gamer in Appleton on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. CT.
