CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery received the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week Award for games played May 18 - May 24 on Tuesday. For the week, Montgomery went 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA in two games started with one earned run allowed on four hits, he did not walk anyone and struck out 15 across 11.1 innings.
Montgomery, a native of Sumter, S.C. and former University of South Carolina standout, began the week fresh off the disabled list with 4.1 strong innings against the Rome Braves on Monday May 18th. He allowed two hits, one of which was a solo homer, did not walk anyone and retired seven by way of the K. The 22-year old's second start was a career outing as he tossed a career-high seven-scoreless innings against the Greenville Drive, the league's top-hitting offense. Montgomery held the Drive to two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
The entire month of May has been outstanding for Montgomery. In four starts he is 2-0 with a 0.49 ERA, allowing the one earned run on eight hits across 18.1 innings pitched. He has walked just six and struck out 20 during the second month of the season. In eight starts during 2015, Montgomery is 4-2 with a 2.27 ERA and has paced the RiverDogs with those numbers.
Montgomery was drafted by the New York Yankees in the fourth round of the 2014 draft out of the University of South Carolina. A 6'4" 225-pound lefty, Montgomery is the first RiverDog to be honored by the South Atlantic League with a pitcher/player of the week award in 2015. Three Charleston pitchers took home the award last year: Luis Niebla, Jaron Long, and Caleb Smith.
