GreenJackets Sweep Another Doubleheader From Charleston

August 3, 2013

AUGUSTA, GA- The Charleston RiverDogs arch nemesis the Augusta GreenJackets swept another doubleheader from the Dogs on Saturday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta in South Atlantic League action. The GreenJackets stole game one 3-2 on a walk-off homer in the bottom of inning number 12, and stole game two 3-2 with another late homer.

With the losses, the RiverDogs are now 22-20 in the second half and 61-49 overall. Charleston is now 3 games behind Lexington for first place in the Southern Division. Augusta's record currently stands at 23-18 in the second half and 61-49 overall and have won seven in a row.

August struck first in game one with a two-out, RBI single by Chuckie Jones to plate Mitch Delfino from second and put the GreenJackets up 1-0.

It stayed that way all the way up until the seventh and final inning of regulation when the RiverDogs offense came to life and scratched across a run on three consecutive singles by Ty Afenir, Ericson Leonora, and Daniel Aldrich. Leonora would finish the game 3-5 with three singles to pace the Dogs.

In the top of the 11th inning with the game tied at one, Greg Bird (1-5, HR) launched a towering solo homer to left center field, his 16th of the year, to untie it and give Charleston a 2-1 lead. That lead would unfortunately be short lived.

In the bottom of the 11th, after a one out walk to Shayne Houck (1-5, walk), pinch hitter Eliezer Zambrano singled to left. The ball got away from left fielder Daniel Aldrich and scooted by him allowing pinch runner Travious Relaford to score from first with two outs and tie the game at 2-2. Following a single to the next batter Shawn Payne (1-4, walk, HBP) Danny Oh threw out Zambrano at home to end the inning and force a 12th frame.

In the 12th, Mitch Delfino crushed a pitch over the left field wall to win it for Augusta with a walk-off bomb and complete the comeback.

The RiverDogs got a solid start from young righty Luis Severino who went four innings and gave up just one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Tyler Webb and Ben Paullus each threw three scoreless innings of relief for Charleston. Derek Varnadore got tagged with the loss to go to 0-5 after allowing two runs, one earned, in 1.1 inniings of work.

Justin Schumer threw 6.1 solid innings giving up just one run on six hits for Augusta. Stephen Johnson retired one batter and stole the win for the GreenJackets to improve to 3-1.

Game two was a much quicker game that saw Charleston's Cito Culver score a run in the first inning on a single, two wild pitches, and a throwing error on the catcher Eliezer Zambrano.

The lead became 2-0 in the top of the third inning following a wild pitch that plated Jake Cave who had singled earlier in the frame.

Augusta made it 2-1 thanks to an RBI groundout by Joey Rapp in the fourth. Then in the fifth, they got a lead-off single by Shayne Houck (2-2, double) and a two-run homer by Andrew Cain to jump in front 3-2. They would not relinquish the lead.

Cesar Vargas threw six solid innings in game two allowing three hits on six hits with five strikeouts, but got tagged with the loss to fall to 4-4.

Lefty Joe Kurrasch made his Augusta debut and tossed five innings of four hit, one run, five strikeout baseball en route to the win to go 1-0. Ian Gardeck worked the six out save for his first of the year.

The final game of this marathon six game series will be Sunday afternoon back at Lake Olmstead Stadium at 2:05pm. Charleston will send LHP Evan Rutckyj (9-7, 4.40 ERA) to the mound and Augusta will answer with LHP Matt Lujan (5-0, 2.66 ERA).
