Knights Rally Late, Fall Short 5-4 on Sunday

(LAWRENCEVILLE, GA) -- Second baseman Eddy Alvarez homered during a three-run, top of the ninth inning, but the Charlotte Knights dropped the finale of their three-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers by a score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon from Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett took two of three games in the series.

Down by a score of 4-1, the Knights rallied for three runs against the Gwinnett bullpen in their final inning to tie the game at 4-4. Alvarez started the late-inning rally with a solo home run, his fourth of the season. Left fielder Mason Robbins and catcher Seby Zavala kept the inning alive with back-to-back RBI singles. Robbins led the Knights with three hits on the afternoon.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, with the game tied at 4-4, the Stripers rallied against the Charlotte bullpen to win the game in walk-off fashion.

RHP Thyago Vieira (0-3, 4.54), who will represent the Knights at the 2018 Triple-A All-Star Game in Columbus, OH on Wednesday, was charged with the loss. Back for his second inning of work, Vieira allowed the first two batters he faced in the ninth inning to reach base (single and a walk), which prompted Charlotte manager, Mark Grudzielanek, to go to the bullpen. LHP Aaron Bummer then allowed back-to-back singles as the Stripers went on to win the finale, 5-4. Dustin Peterson's RBI single in the ninth led the Stripers to the victory.

RHP Jordan Stephens started for the Knights and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 5.2 innings pitched. Stephens, 25, struck-out six batters and did not factor in the decision.

The Knights finished the first half of the 2018 season with a 40-49 record.

The Knights will now have Monday through Wednesday off for the 2018 Triple-A All-Star break. The team will return to the baseball diamond on Thursday, July 12th to open a four-game series against the Durham Bulls (Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC.
