(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) – Mark Payton and Jake Burger each blasted home runs to power the red-hot Charlotte Knights past the Gwinnett Stripers on Saturday night by a score of 9-3 in game five of the six-game series from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The win was Charlotte’s fourth straight and sixth over the team’s last seven games.

A night after winning both games of a doubleheader on walk-off hits, the Knights won again on Saturday against the Stripers. This time, the Knights scored early and often en route to the fourth win of the series in five games.

Charlotte jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning with help from an RBI single by Burger, which ended up scoring two runs on the play. An error was charged to Gwinnett right fielder Greyson Junista, which allowed Yolbert Sánchez to score. Zach Remillard added an RBI single in the inning and Adam Haseley later scored a run on a throwing error by Gwinnett third baseman Taylor Motter.

LHP Kyle Kubat started the game for the Knights and was solid on the hill. He pitched into the fifth inning and allowed three runs – both on home runs. His gave up a solo home run to Joe Dunand in the third inning and a two-run home run to Braden Shewmake in the fifth inning.

With the Knights ahead by a score of 4-3, Payton provided some insurance with his 14th home run of the season in the fifth inning. Two innings later, Burger added his fifth home run of the season to give the Knights a 7-3 lead at that point. The Knights added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to an RBI single by Blake Rutherford and an RBI double by Laz Rivera. In all, the Knights pounded out 11 hits on the evening.

Burger finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, the home run and three RBIs. It was his second consecutive game with a home run. Payton finished the contest with two hits, three runs scored and the home run. He is currently tied with catcher Carlos Pérez for the team lead in RBIs with 57.

RHP J.B. Olson (1-2, 4.95) was the winning pitcher on Saturday. He came on in relief of Kubat and allowed just one hit over 1.2 shutout innings. The Charlotte bullpen combined to hold the Stripers scoreless over the final 4.2 innings on Saturday.

The Knights will conclude the six-game home series against the Gwinnett Stripers on Sunday night. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. from Truist Field.
