DUNEDIN, Fla. (August 5, 2018) - Tristan Gray homered twice and drove in seven runs but the Charlotte Stone Crabs squandered an eight-run lead in a 14-9 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays Sunday.
Gray set a career-high with seven RBI, delivering his first multi-home run game of his professional career. Second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz also set a career high with four hits.
The Stone Crabs (58-50, 24-17) used Gray's pair of three-run homers as well as a solo shot from Brendan McKay to race ahead of Dunedin (60-51, 29-14) and take a 9-1 lead in the middle of the fifth.
After the Blue Jays scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to knock out Charlotte starter Brian Shaffer, Orlando Romero (0-1) surrendered six runs without recording an out.
Dunedin tacked on four more runs against two other Stone Crabs relievers, handing Charlotte its first sweep since June 27-28 at Lakeland.
The Stone Crabs' pitching staff set season highs for runs allowed (14) and hits allowed (21). The team's eight-run advantage was the largest lead that they surrendered in a defeat this year.
The Stone Crabs will return home to start a three-game series against the Bradenton Marauders at 6:35 p.m. Sunday. Josh Fleming (1-1, 4.05) makes the start for Charlotte against Gavin Wallace (2-1, 6.68) of the Marauders. Coverage starts at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
