PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (May 3, 2018) - Peter Maris' seventh inning homer sealed the Charlotte Stone Crabs' first shutout win of the season, beating the St. Lucie Mets 1-0 at Charlotte Sports Park.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, Maris turned on a 3-1 pitch from Mets (11-15) starter Harol Gonzalez (0-3), putting it out to right to account for all the scoring in the game.
Stone Crabs (13-14) right-handers Willy Ortiz and Curtis Taylor combined to four-hit St. Lucie. Ortiz went 6.1 innings to start, allowing just three hits while fanning four.
Taylor (3-0) stranded the potential go-ahead run in the seventh and worked 2.2 scoreless frames to get the win.
Maris was the only Charlotte hitter with multiple hits. Lucius Fox reached base three times.
The Stone Crabs' bullpen was outstanding in the series, registering 9.2 innings of shutout ball. Charlotte relievers struck out 11 while surrendering just six hits and two walks.
The Stone Crabs will open a three-game series against Bradenton at Charlotte Sports Park at 6:35 p.m. Thursday. Brock Burke (1-2, 6.56) gets the ball for Charlotte against James Marvel (1-2, 4.23) of the Marauders. Coverage starts at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
