JUPITER, Fla. (June 21, 2018) - Jesús Sánchez' fifth inning grand slam powered the Stone Crabs to a 10-1 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals to start the second half Thursday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
The Stone Crabs (1-0, 35-33) racked up 16 hits after posting 18 on Wednesday. Six Charlotte hitters notched multi-hit games.
Sanchez' grand slam came on the heels of three straight singles to start the fifth, extending the Stone Crabs' lead to 7-0. Kevin Padlo followed with a solo shot to left to make it 8-0. The Stone Crabs scored all five runs in the fifth in a six-pitch span.
Charlotte got on the board first in the top of the second. Sanchez, Padlo and Miles Mastrobuoni all singled before Jermaine Palacios drove home Sanchez with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Two batters later, David Olmedo-Barrera cranked a two-run double to right center to score both runners and extend the lead to 3-0.
Stone Crabs starter Blake Bivens (4-0) worked six excellent innings, allowing only one run on five hits. He struck out a season-high eight for the second straight outing and did not walk a batter. Bivens has allowed only two earned runs over his last 17.1 innings.
Right-hander Ruben Alaniz worked two scoreless innings in his Charlotte debut.
The Stone Crabs added two runs in the top of the eighth on a Lucius Fox RBI single and a Palm Beach (0-1, 39-26) error.
