Five-run fifth gives Charlotte decisive lead

CLEARWATER, Fla. (July 6, 2018) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs used a five-run fifth inning to hold off the Clearwater Threshers 6-4 Friday night at Spectrum Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Stone Crabs (41-41, 7-8) center fielder Josh Lowe singled to right before Miles Mastrobuoni pulled a double over the first base bag. Lowe came around to score on a fielding error by the Clearwater (41-41, 9-5) right fielder to tie the game at one. Jesús Sánchez then lined a single to right to plate Mastrobuoni and make it 2-1 Stone Crabs. After Jermaine Palacios reached on an error, Tristan Gray skied an RBI double to center to make it 3-1. Two batters later, Zac Law drilled a single to left to plate Palacios and make it 4-1. With Gray at third, David Olmedo-Barrera grounded out to second to score Law and cap the inning at 5-1.
Charlotte starter Riley O'Brien (1-1) went 5.2 innings to earn his first High-A win. O'Brien allowed two runs (one earned) on just two hits while striking out four and walking three. Zack Mozingo went 1.1 innings to finish off his first save of the year.
The Stone Crabs added another run in the top of the seventh on a Lowe single.
Lowe finished with three hits Friday and is now 14-for-27 (.519) with seven extra-base hits over his last eight games.
The Stone Crabs will go for the series win over Clearwater at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Willy Ortiz (4-2, 4.03) will pitch for Charlotte against McKenzie Mills (0-2, 3.54) of the Threshers. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
