PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 16, 2018) - Stone Crabs starting pitcher Willy Ortiz has been named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for July 9-15, the league office announced Monday.
Ortiz is the first Charlotte pitcher to win the award in 2018. First baseman Nate Lowe (April 23-29) and infielder Peter Maris (May 14-20) garnered Player of the Week awards earlier this season.
Ortiz turned in his first career shutout on July 12 against St. Lucie, striking out six batters while allowing only three hits over seven innings.
The Dominican Republic native is now 7-2 with a 3.60 ERA for the season, holding opposing hitters to a .215 batting average. The FSL All-Star ranks first amongst active Stone Crabs pitchers in innings (80.0) while placing second in strikeouts (71).
