Clippers win Fifteen Inning Affair

It took fifteen long innings, but it was worth the wait as Columbus beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 6-5 at McCoy Stadium.

From the get-go, Pawtucket had the bats working. Jose Iglesias scored on a Bryce Brentz RBI groundout to start the scoring. Brandon Snyder then added to the Red Sox lead with an RBI single to make it 2-0 in favor of Pawtucket. Brentz would later add a two run homer in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-0 affair.

Columbus would finally get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Jeremy Hermida hit a solo homer over the right field wall. They would then make it a closer contest in the top of the fifth. An RBI single by Cord Phelps and an RBI double by Hermida drew the Clippers to within a run of Pawtucket.

Pawtucket got one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh when Jackie Bradley Jr. drove home a run with an RBI single, but Columbus would not go quietly. Chris Wallace banged an RBI double off the right field wall to make it a 5-4 game.

Columbus then rallied in the top of the ninth. Leadoff walks by Phelps and Hermida started the frame. Following a Mike McDade fly-out, Matt Carson loaded the bases with an infield single. Ryan Rohlinger then tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single. Unfortunately, that would be it for Columbus as they left the bases loaded to end the inning.

The game would go to extra frames. No scoring would take place until the top of the fifteenth inning when Phelps drove home Tim Fedroff with an RBI sacrifice fly. That proved to be the deciding run as the Clippers clinched a winning road trip. Jerry Gil (W, 3-0) got the win for Columbus. Drew Sutton (L, 0-1) took the loss for Pawtucket.

After a day-off on Wednesday, the Clippers return home to Huntington Park as they open a six game home stand. They will begin the home slate with a three game series involving the Rochester Red Wings. Columbus will send the left-hander T.J. House (0-0, 3.00) to the mound. The Red Wings will give the ball to righty P.J. Walters (2-2, 3.72). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
