Columbus bests Louisville 2-0

Goedert two run shot in ninth proves to be the difference
August 28, 2012

Columbus saved the best for the last, plating two runs in the top of the ninth as they beat the Bats 2-0 in a tight pitcher's duel at Louisville Slugger Field.

Early on, it was a pitcher's duel between Columbus' Eric Berger and Louisville's Todd Redmond. Both hurlers shut out their opponents through the first five innings of play. It would remain scoreless through eight frames of action.

Finally, there would be some scoring in the top of the ninth. Clippers right-fielder Vinnie Rottino led off the frame with a single. He would advance to second on a throwing error by Louisville reliever Logan Ondrusek. The very next batter, Jared Goedert, then delivered with a two run home run, his fourteenth of the year, over the right field wall.

With a 2-0 advantage, Scott Barnes came on in the ninth and sealed the victory for the Clippers. Dan Wheeler (W, 3-3) got the win for Columbus, Ondrusek (L, 0-1) took the loss for Louisville, and Barnes (2) picked up the save.

Columbus will conclude its short two game series with the Bats down in the Bluegrass State of Kentucky on Wednesday night. Venezuelan right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (6-5, 4.41) gets the start for the Clippers. Louisville will counter with righty Pedro Villareal (3-11, 4.70). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
