Columbus roasts Pigs

Hermida drives in three to pace Clippers offensively
July 19, 2013

Columbus got another victory over Lehigh Valley, defeating the Iron Pigs 7-2 thanks in large part to a six run seventh inning.

The Clippers struck first offensively with a Jeremy Hermida RBI single in the top of the first. Leandro Castro would help the Iron Pigs get on the board by scoring on a Tyson Gillies fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth.

Daisuke Matsuzaka delivered a strong performance on the mound, holding Lehigh Valley to one run on seven hits to go along with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Iron Pigs lefty Raul Valdes nearly matched Matsuzaka as he limited Columbus to one run on five hits while striking out five in six frames.

The Clippers broke the game open in the top of the seventh. Ryan Rohlinger gave Columbus another one run lead with an RBI single. Tim Fedroff would also plate another run in that inning with an RBI double to center. Hermida kept the scoring going with a two run single to left and Juan Diaz capped the inning in grand style with a two run homer. It all added up to a six run inning for Columbus.

Freddy Galvis got the Pigs on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, but that end up being the extent of the scoring for Lehigh Valley as the Clippers collected their seventh win in their last nine games. Matsuzaka (W, 2-5) received the win for Columbus. Mike MacDougal (L, 1-2) was hit with the loss for Lehigh Valley.

Columbus will get back at it with Lehigh Valley on Saturday night. The Clippers will give the ball to Venezuelan righty Carlos Carrasco (3-0, 3.29). The Iron Pigs will counter with right-hander Tyler Cloyd (2-8, 6.89). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
