Indianapolis shuts down Columbus

Clippers fall in low scoring game to open second half
July 17, 2014

COLUMBUS, OH- The Columbus Clippers (54-46) fell to the Indianapolis Indians (53-47) 1-0 to start the second half. Columbus was held to three hits in the game and each hit came in a different inning. The loss for Columbus ended a four-game winning streak.

Brandon Cumpton (5-1, 1.50 ERA) was dominant Thursday night. He didn't give up any runs in eight innings pitched on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Tyler Sturdevant (1-1, 2.45 ERA) allowed the Indians run in the ninth.

Danny Salazar (3-6, 4.02 ERA) was solid for the Clippers, but received no decision. He allowed no runs in five and two-thirds innings and surrendered three hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Columbus had a golden opportunity in the first, but did nothing with it. The Clippers drew a pair of walks and got a single by Jesus Aguilar to load the bases with no outs. An infield fly and doubleplay ball ended the inning.

It would be seven innings until the Clippers got another scoring threat.

Carlos Moncrief started out the eighth with a rocket hit above the glove of Indianapolis shortstop Blake Davis. Moncrief wheeled around first and slid into second with a lead-off double. After Ryan Rohlinger sacrificed him to third with a bunt the Clippers had the go-ahead run at third with one out.

Columbus did not convert.

The Indians had that exact situation in the ninth after a Chris McGuiness lead-off double.

Indianapolis did convert.

Dean Anna hit a sacrifice fly to score the Indy run.

Moncrief also threw out a runner in the third on a hit-and-run for Indy. It was his IL-leading 17th outfield assist.

Game two of four at Huntington Park between the Clippers and Indians is 7:15 p.m. Friday night. Tyler Cloyd (7-5, 4.11 ERA) will be the starter against Adam Wilk (7-8, 4.33 ERA) and Indianapolis.
