Knights sink Clippers 8-3

Charlotte's Stewart strikes out seven in win
May 8, 2013

Led by the bat of Josh Phegley and the pitching arm of Zach Stewart, the Charlotte Knights upended the Clippers 8-3 at Huntington Park.

The Knights opened the scoring with a big top of the third. Brent Morel started it with an RBI single to left. Josh Phegley then cranked a two run shot into the Scotts Field Seats in left-center. It amounted to a three run frame as Charlotte took an early 3-0 lead.

Columbus would get on the board with an Omir Sants solo homer in the bottom of the third. The very next inning, Charlotte went to work once again with the bats. Jim Gallagher scored from third on a Blake Tekotte RBI sacrifice fly and Carlos Sanchez drove home a run with an RBI double, making it a 5-1 affair. Phegley added an RBI double in the top of the seventh and Morel contributed with an RBI single in the top of the ninth.

Indians outfielder Michael Bourn, making his second rehab start with Columbus, had a quiet night at the plate, going 0-4 with a strikeout.

Despite a Matt Carson solo bomb over the right field wall in the bottom of the seventh and a Matt LaPorta solo shot over the center field wall in the bottom of the ninth. Charlotte would come away with the win. Zach Stewart (W, 1-4) was sharp for the Knights, striking out seven while limiting Columbus to one run on five hits in six innings of work. T.J. House (L, 0-2) took the loss for Columbus.

Columbus concludes its four game set with Charlotte with a business day special on Thursday afternoon. The Clippers will tap righty Joe Martinez (1-2, 2.55) as their starter on the mound. The Knights will send right-hander Andre Rienzo (2-2, 6.82) to the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 PM.
