RailRiders sneak by Clippers 2-1

Betances bests Matsuzaka in pitcher's duel
April 23, 2013

The Clippers came up short in a pitcher's duel as they fell 2-1 to the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders at PNC Field.

Columbus would break through offensively in the top of the fourth when Cord Phelps drove home a run with an RBI double. The RailRiders would then take the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two run homer by Dan Johnson.

Both starting pitchers were dynamite for their respected ball clubs. Clippers right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka (L, 0-2) held the RailRiders to 2 runs on three hits while striking out eight and walking two in 6 1/3 innings. Dellin Betances (W, 1-2) was just as impressive for Scranton/Wilkes Barre. He limited Columbus to one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking two in seven innings.

The Clippers would try to mount a rally in the top of the ninth. One out singles by Jeremy Hermida and Adan Abraham would bring Cedric Hunter to the plate. Unfortunately, Hunter grounded into a game ending 5-4-3 double play. Preston Claiborne (S, 2) nailed down the save for the RailRiders.

The Clippers continue their four game set with the RailRiders on a Wednesday business day special. Columbus will send right-hander Trevor Bauer (1-0, 2.08) to the hill. Scranton/Wilkes Barre counters with righty Ryan Hope (1-0, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM.
