COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia bounced back from consecutive losses with an 11-2 steamrolling of Charleston on Tuesday night. The offense tallied 16 hits - one off the season high - and Tony Dibrell picked up his sixth win of the year.
Dibrell (W, 6-6) struck out five and set the new single-season strikeout record. The right-hander passed Joe Shaw who punched 134 batters in 2016. Dibrell has fanned 138 hitters in 125 innings this season. That's tops in the South Atlantic League.
Almost every hitter in the lineup tallied a multi-hit game. When it was all said and done, seven did so, including the last five hitters in the order. Edgardo Fermin led the way with three hits. The 20-year-old tripled in a pair of runs in the seventh, giving him seven three-baggers on the year. Fermin tied Kevin Kaczmarski (2016) for the most triples in a single season.
Columbia (61-66) took an early 2-0 first-inning lead over Charleston (60-70) and never looked back. The Fireflies later led 6-1 with four runs in the fourth and 11-2 after another four-run outburst in the seventh. Zach Rheams ripped his sixth home run of the season in the fifth frame.
