NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - Columbia suffered a 4-0 series-opening loss to Augusta on Friday night. The Fireflies and GreenJackets did complete a suspended game from July 29 on Friday as well. Zach Rheams drilled his eighth homer of the year in that game and propelled Columbia to a 4-0 victory.
The suspended game from July 29 restarted in the bottom of the fifth inning with Columbia (63-68) already ahead, 2-0. Yeizo Campos (W, 3-4) began the game on the mound and spun five scoreless innings. He scattered just four hits, struck out five and picked up the win.
Columbia pulled ahead, 4-0, in the eighth when Rheams ripped his eighth home run of the season. Rheams drilled it over the centerfield wall at SRP Park.
The Fireflies were not as fortunate in the following game against the GreenJackets on Friday. Columbia only tallied three hits and was shut out.
Augusta (65-69) scored three times in the second. First, Ryan Kirby scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, after singling, Jacob Gonzalez reached third base on a passed ball. Shane Matheny drove him in with a sacrifice fly into centerfield. That wasn't all. With two outs, Tim DalPorto struck a base hit and scored when Ismael Munguia tripled.
The home team added one more in the fourth and held the 4-0 lead through the final inning.
Columbia's series with Augusta continues on Saturday at 6:05 ET. Righties Nicolas Debora (3-4, 3.22) and Garrett Cave (5-9, 5.52) battle on the mound. You can listen to the action on FOX Sports Radio 1400 AM, ColumbiaFireflies.com and the iHeartRadio app starting at 5:45 p.m.
