Carlos Guzman Named NYPL Pitcher of the Week

20-year-old starter pitched six hitless innings at Tri-City last Thursday

NORWICH, Ct. - The Connecticut Tigers, Class A Short Season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, are pleased to announce right-handed pitcher Carlos Guzman was named the New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week for August 13-19 according to 

On August 16, Guzman pitched six hitless innings as the starter for Connecticut during a road game against the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats. The 20-year-old from Maracay, Venezuela retired the first three batters before he issued a leadoff walk to Tri-City designated hitter Alex Holderbach in the second inning. Two batters later, Guzman induced a 4-6-3 double play and proceeded to face the minimum through six scoreless innings. Guzman struck out three batters with one walk and threw 75 pitches.

The Tigers secured a 2-1 win at Tri-City to improve Guzman's record to 3-3 this season. Guzman is carrying a 3.12 earned run average with 44 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings with an opponent batting average of .203. In his last three starts, including the no-hit appearance at Tri-City, Guzman has allowed one earned run in 17 innings with eight hits, three walks, and 13 strikeouts.

Guzman signed with the Detroit Tigers as an international free agent in 2015. He posted an ERA of 0.70 across 25 2/3 innings in his first season stateside with Gulf Coast League Tigers East and West during the 2017 campaign. Guzman earned his first promotion to Connecticut in 2018 and joined the team on the Opening Night roster. He's scheduled to make his next start for Connecticut this Thursday in Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
