CORPUS CHRISTI - The Hooks were shut out by the Amarillo Sod Poodles 6-0 Sunday to split the four-game series at Whataburger Field.
All four teams in the Texas League South are within 1.0 game of each other with seven games remaining in the first half.
The Hooks failed to seize sole possession of first place from the Frisco RoughRiders, who were swept Sunday by the Midland RockHounds.
Southpaw Brett Adcock (L, 1-6) was tagged for six runs (4 earned) on five hits over 4.0 innings, with all scoring coming in the first three frames.
In the third, the first five Soddies reached base with four being plated. Edward Olivares hit an RBI single and Luis Torrens had an RBI double in the frame.
After Torrens' double, Adcock, Layne Henderson and Enoli Paredes retired the final 21 batters of the ballgame.
Paredes, Houston's No. 26 prospect according to MLB.com, was perfect in his Double-A debut. The 23-year-old flamethrower struck out five over his 4.0 frames.
Corpus Christi's offense was stifled by Adrian Morejon, Emmanuel Ramirez (W, 5-4) and David Bednar. Ramirez (W, 5-4) threw 6.0 scoreless innings allowing four hits with seven punchouts in relief of the "opener" Morejon.
The Hooks begin a crucial series against the Texas League-best Arkansas Travelers, who clinched the North division Sunday, with three games beginning Tuesday in North Little Rock. Righty Carson LaRue (1-2, 5.72) is slated for the Hooks against righty Darren McCaughan (4-3, 2.88) for the Travs.
