Cougars Crush Chiefs

GENEVA, Ill. - Three runs in the first inning and three more in the second pushed the Kane County Cougars to a convincing 11-2 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, a game that was called because of rain after the bottom of the eighth.

Rock Shoulders gave the Cougars (54-80, 24-44) their initial lead in the bottom of the first as he bounced a single up the middle to score Gioskar Amaya with the bases loaded. Chris Perry (2-4) then fired a wild pitch to bring home Brad Zapenas while Jeimer Candelaio scored on a Marco Hernandez base hit to make it a 3-0 contest.

Three more tallies came across for the Cougars in the bottom of the second against Perry. After consecutive walks, Shoulders smacked a double into the left-center field gap to bring home both Zapenas and Candelario. Shoulders scored on a throwing error by catcher Jonathan Keener to put the Cougars up by six.

Perry only lasted 1.2 innings before Peoria (68-68, 30-39) dug into their bullpen. Joe Donofrio took over and coughed up another three-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Zapenas doubled and scored on another error by Keener while Oliver Zapata cracked a two-run single.

Nathan Dorris (7-3) was solid through five frames for the Cougars as he held the Chiefs to just a run on four hits. Trevor Gretzky added his first career professional home run in the bottom of the fifth. Each team tacked on a run in the eighth inning before the rain started falling quickly, canceling the final frame.

The Cougars finish the 2013 season on Monday afternoon when they take on the Chiefs at 1:00 from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Right-hander Scott Baker (1-2) will make his final rehab start for the Cougars against fellow righty Silfredo Garcia (4-5). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit
