GENEVA, Ill. - With just three hits on the night, the Kane County Cougars didn't manage much offense in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Quad Cities (49-36, 11-5) grabbed the advantage in the top of the second as Austin Elkins drew a two-out walk from Jose Rosario (0-5). Jobduan Morales made the Cougars (34-48, 4-12) pay as he walloped a double to the wall in center, scoring Elkins.
In the third, the River Bandits added to the lead. Teoscar Hernandez cracked a leadoff single and came home when Jordan Scott drilled a double into the left-center field gap. On the relay throw to the plate, catcher Carlos Escobar fielded and fired to third as Scott reached for an extra base, that throw flew into left field which allowed Scott to come home.
Rosario lost his control in the fourth inning as he walked the bases loaded before Hernandez bounced into a fielder's choice at third which let Elkins cross the dish. One inning later, Dan Gulbransen tripled to straightaway center and was chased to the plate after a sac fly from Rio Ruiz.
Mike Hauschild (6-1) shut the Cougars down as he worked seven solid frames while surrendering just three singles. The Cougars never put a man in scoring position against Hauschild. They finally did in the eighth after two walks and a wlid pitch from Daniel Minor, but Kevin Encarnacion stranded both runners by striking out looking. Chia-Jen Lo tossed a scoreless ninth. Albert Almora singled in the bottom of the fourth and appeared to injure himself while sliding into second base, trying to break up a double play. He left the game in the fifth.
