BIRTHDAYS:

Bobby Bradley ('00, P) turns 33. The native of West Palm Beach, FL was the first round pick of the Pirates in 1999 out of Wellington Christian Academy. He made 14 starts for Hickory and went 8-2 with three complete games and a 2.29 ERA. In 82.2 innings, Bradley struck out 118, walked 21 and allowed 31 runs (21 earned) on 62 hits. His ratio of 12.85 strikeouts per nine innings is the second best in club history and is tied for third in complete games. Bradley pitched at high-A Lynchburg in 2001 and 2003. In 2004, he spent the season at AA Altoona before a final season at AAA Indianapolis in 2005.

Shelby Ford ('06, 2B) turns 29. The native of Ft. Worth, TX was the Pirates third round pick in 2006 out of Oklahoma State University. He joined the Crawdads soon after he was drafted and batted .269 with 16 doubles, three triples, six homers and 27 RBI. After playing at high-A Lynchburg in 2007, Ford split the next four seasons at AA Altoona and AAA Indianapolis before the Pirates released him. He played the last two years with Ft. Worth with a brief spell at the end of this season with El Paso in the independent American Association.

Luis Marte ('13, SS) turns 20. The native of San Francisco de Macoris, D.R. was signed as an international free agent by the Rangers in 2010. He was the starting shortstop for Hickory in 2013 and batted .217 with 16 doubles, three homers and 27 RBI in 125 games. In the field, Marte set a club record with 84 double plays turned by a shortstop in a single-season. He is also second in a season in putouts (197), third in games played (125), fourth in total chances (617), fifth in assists (383) and ninth in fielding pct. (.940).

BIRTHDAYS:

Zach Cone ('12, OF) turns 24. The native of Lilburn, GA was the first round pick of the Rangers in 2011 out of the University of Georgia. In 112 games with Hickory, Cone batted .262 with 27 doubles, four triples, 17 homers, and 64 RBI. Cone committed only one error in 203 chances (.995 fielding pct.) which is the second best mark for an outfielder in club history. He played this past season at Myrtle Beach.

BIRTHDAYS:

Marcos Fereira ('95, P) turns 39. The native of Valencia, Venezuela was signed as an international free agent by the White Sox in 1991. Fereira made four relief appearances with Hickory and went 0-2 with a 16.88 ERA. In 2.2 innings, he struck out one, walked four and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits. The White Sox released him while with Hickory.

Josh Fogg ('98, P) turns 37. The native of Ft. Lauderdale, FL was the White Sox third round pick in 1998 out of the University of Florida. He made eight starts with Hickory after his selection and went 1-3 with a 2.18 ERA. In 41.1 innings, Fogg struck out 29, walked 13 and allowed 17 runs (10 earned) on 36 hits. Fogg worked through the White Sox chain at high-A Winston-Salem in 1999, at AA Birmingham late in 1999 and 2000, and at AAA Charlotte in 2001. He made his big league debut with the White Sox on 9/2/01. A trade sent Fogg to Pittsburgh through 2005. He signed with Colorado as a free agent and pitched with the Rockies in 2006 and was a member of the club's World Series team in 2007. Fogg then pitched for the Reds in 2008 before he returned to the Rockies in 2009. He closed out his career in the Phillies system at AA Reading in 2010. Fogg is a member of the University of Florida sports hall of fame.

 

TRANSACTIONS:

Brent Lillibridge ('06, SS) signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. Lillibridge played with the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees in 2013.

Jonathan Roof ('10-'11, UT) was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. He played this past season in the Phillies chain at low-A Lakewood and at high-A Clearwater.

Richard Bleier ('09, P) was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. He played this past season in the Rangers system at AA Frisco and at AAA Round Rock.

Cody Kendall ('13, P) turns 24. The native of Clovis, CA was the Rangers eighth round pick in 2012 out of Fresno State. He made 25 relief appearances for the Crawdads and went 2-2 with seven saves and a 3.43 ERA. In 42 innings, Kendall struck out 25, walked six, and allowed 21 runs (16 earned) on 47 hits. He was promoted to high-A Myrtle Beach during the season and finished the season with the Pelicans.

Tuesday, December 10

BIRTHDAYS:

Jorge Charry ('08, P) turns 27. The native of Tajardo, P.R. was the Pirates 32nd round pick in 2008 out of Florida Gateway College. In three games with the Crawdads, Charry struck out five, walked two and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits in 6.1 innings. Charry pitched one season in 2009 with Lake Erie in the independent Frontier League.

Rafael De Los Santos ('07-'08, P) turns 27. The native of San Pedro de Macoris, D.R. signed as an international free agent by the Pirates in 2003. He joined the Crawdads late in 2007 and stayed with the club all of 2008. He went 5-12 with a 5.35 ERA in 33 games (30 starts). In 143 innings, De Los Santos struck out 113, walked 92 and allowed 97 runs (85 earned) on 139 hits. He is tied for third in a season home runs allowed (20), fourth in walks, sixth in earned runs, ninth in hit batters (13) and losses and is tenth in runs allowed. De Los Santos pitched one more season in 2009 at low-A West Virginia before the Pirates released him.

Derek Drage ('05-'06, P) turns 32. The native of Bonduel, WA was the Pirates' 21st round pick in 2004 out of Missouri St. Drage pitched in 53 games (one start) and went 3-5 with six saves and a 3.52 ERA. In 99.2 innings, Drage struck out 78, walked 35, and allowed 45 runs (39 earned) on 85 hits. The Pirates released Drage, who then went on to pitch one season for North Shore in the independent Can-Am League in 2007. Drage has been the pitching coach for North Area Community College since 2011 and made a brief comeback on the mound as he pitched in 2012 for Gary in the independent American Association.

Nicolas Suero ('06, P) turns 29. The native of Elias Pinas, D.R. was signed by the Pirates as an international free agent in 2002. He pitched in two games (one start) for Hickory allowed eight runs on nine hits in five innings with two strikeouts and three walks. Suero pitched at short-season State College in 2007 before the Pirates released him. He then pitched at Nashua in the independent Can-Am League in 2008.

BIRTHDAYS:

Jason Herman ('05, P) turns 32. The native of Marshfield, MO was the Pirates 31st round pick in 2005 out of the University of West Alabama. Herman made a start on the final day of the 2005 and allowed three runs on five hits over six innings with two walks and two strikeouts for the win. He pitched at short-season Williamsport in 2006 before the Pirates released him. Herman went to Winnipeg in the independent Northern League in 2007 and then to Gateway (Frontier) in 2007-2008. His final two seasons came in 2009-2010 at Shreveport-Bossier in the American Association.
