Walker's Double the Difference in Bucs Win

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

Neil Walker ('05, C/ Pittsburgh) went 2-for-4 with a and a two-run double in the 8th that was the difference in the Pirates 8-6 win over Toronto.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Akeem Bostick ('14, P) turns 19. The native of Florence, S.C. was the second round pick of the Rangers in 2013. So far this season, Bostick is 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA in five starts. He has 12 strikeouts and seven walks in 23 innings and has allowed 14 runs (11 earned) on 22 hits.

Javier Guzman ('04, SS) turns 32. The native of Samana, D.R. signed with the Pirates as an international free agent in 2000. In 124 games, Guzman batted .306 with 20 doubles, 12 triples, two homers and 63 RBI. He is tied for first in a season in triples and seventh in singles (110). Guzman remained with the Pirates at high-A Lynchburg in 2005, and at AA Lynchburg in 2006-2007. He then signed with the Braves and played two seasons (2008-2009) at AA Mississippi. His final season came in 2010 with the Marlins at three separate levels, including his only AAA stint at New Orleans.

Landon Jacobsen ('00-'01, P) turns 35. The native of Canova, SD was the 50th round pick of the Pirates in 1999 out of Trinidad St. Junior College (CO). Overall in 14 games (13 starts), Jacobsen went 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA. He struck out 75, walked 22, and allowed 40 runs (32 earned) on 85 hits in 83 innings. Jacobsen stayed in the Pirates chain through 2006 when he made it to AAA Indianapolis. He spent one final season in affiliated ball with the Philles at AA Reading and AAA Ottawa in 2007 before calling it a career in 2008 after a brief stay with Somerset of the independent Atlantic League.

Brent Lillibridge ('06, SS/ Round Rock) went 3-for-5, with a double, a run scored and an RBI to help the Express to an 8-5 win over New Orleans.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Kellin Deglan ('11-'12, '14, C) turns 22. The native of Langley, B.C. Canada was the first round pick of the Rangers in 2010 out of R.E. Mountain Secondary School in Langley He is currently in his third full season with Hickory after spending last year with high-A Myrtle Beach. Overall with Hickory, Deglan has batted .232 with 44 doubles, five triples, 21 homers and 93 RBI. He is fourth in club history in doubles, seventh in sac flies (10) and 10th in strikeouts (210). He also owns many of the club's overall catching records and in 2012 placed second in team history in fielding pct. (989).

Mike Hofius ('05-'06, 1B) turns 32. The native of Lakewood, CA was the 22nd round pick of the Pirates in 2004 out of Long Beach State. He played in Hickory all of 2005 and briefly in 2006 before retiring. Overall, Hofius batted .221 with eight doubles, four homers and 30 RBI.

Steve Pearce ('06, 1B/ Baltimore) went 3-for-4 with two RBI to help the Orioles to a 5-1 win over Pittsburgh in game one of a doubleheader. He also doubled and scored in Baltimore's 6-5 win in game two.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

John Niggli ('13, P) turns 24. The native of Tulare, CA was the ninth round pick of the Rangers in 2012 out of Liberty University (VA). He went 1-1 in two starts for Hickory with a 2.92 ERA. In 12.1 innings, Niggli struck out eight, walked one, and allowed six runs (four earned) on 13 hits. He was released this spring.

Mike Ortiz ('10, 1B) turns 25. The native of Miami, FL was the 28th round pick of the Rangers in 2007 out of Palmetto High School in Miami. He batted .223 with 15 doubles, three triples, six homers and 35 RBI. Ortiz was released in spring training in 2011.

Bobby Spain ('08, 3B) turns 29. The native of Norman, OK was the 19th round pick of the Pirates in 2007 out of Oklahoma City University. He batted .312 with 22 doubles, five homers and 43 RBI. Spain had a 21-game hitting streak during the season which led to his selection to the SAL all-star game. HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

Brian Bixler ('05, SS/ San Antonio- San Diego) slugged a two-run HR (1) in the bottom of the tenth to give the Missions a 9-7 win over Frisco. He went 4-for-6 in the game with two runs and three RBI.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Curtis Broome ('94, P) would have been 42 today. The native of Gary, IN was the 22nd round pick of the White Sox in 1993 out of the University of Evansville (IN). He went 5-5 with a 4.62 ERA and three saves in 32 appearances (15 starts). In 120.2 innings, Broome struck out 74, walked 31, and allowed 77 runs (62 earned) on 144 hits. He pitched for low-A South Bend in 1995 and high-A Prince William in 1996 before his release. Broome passed away on December 2, 2006.

Luke Fitzpatrick ('98, P) turns 38. The native of Lakewood, CA signed with the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent in 1997 out of Long Beach St. He went 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA in 20 relief outings with Hickory. In 28.2 innings, Fitzpatrick struck out 21, walked 16, and allowed 14 runs (10 earned) on 37 hits. He was released after the season.

Phil Klein ('12, P) turns 25. The native of Gahanna, OH was the 30th round pick of the Rangers in 2011 out of Youngstown St. (OH). Selected to the SAL all-star game, Klein went 6-0 with eight saves and a 1.90 ERA in 33 games for Hickory. In 52 innings, Klein struck out 53, walked 21, and allowed 12 runs (11 earned) on 37 hits. He finished up 2012 at high-A Myrtle Beach and started there last year before his promotion at AA Frisco, where he remains this season.

David Welch ('95, P) turns 44. The native of Violet, LA signed with the White Sox as a free agent in 1995 after his release from the Indians. In a club record 60 games, Welch went 4-5 with five saves and a 2.67 ERA. In 77.2 innings, Welch struck out 82, walked 21, and allowed 39 runs (23 earned) on 68 hits. He was released after the season.

BIRTHDAYS:

Brian Scott ('97-'98, P) turns 38. The native of Riverside, CA was the sixth round pick of the White Sox in 1997 out of San Diego St. He made 13 starts for Hickory after his selection in 1997 and then returned for six more in 1998. Overall, Scott went 10-5 with a 2.36 ERA and a complete game. In 122 innings, Scott struck out 107, walked 34, and allowed 42 runs (32 earned) on 90 hits. He finished up 1998 at high-A Winston-Salem and returned there in 1999. He closed out his playing career in 2000 with the Diamondbacks chain at high-A High Desert and AA El Paso.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

Ryan Rua ('13, 2B/ Frisco) slugged a solo HR (5) in the ninth inning to provide the winning margin in the RoughRiders 4-3 win over Corpus Christi.  

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Jason Gray ('96, P) turns 37. The native of Coconut Creek, FL was the 22nd round pick of the White Sox in 1995. He went 3-8 in 13 starts with a 4.59 and a shutout. In 68.2 innings, Gray struck out 61, walked 28, and allowed 45 runs (35 earned) on 67 hits. He split 1997 with short-season Bristol and the rookie Gulf Coast League before his release. He finished out his career with Adirondack of the independent Northern League through 1999.

Romulo Sanchez ('05-'06, P) turns 30. The native of Carora, Lara, Venezuela signed with the Pirates in 2004 after his release from the Dodgers. He made 10 starts in 2005 and then returned in 2006 to make 21 appearances (three starts). Overall, Sanchez went 3-6 with four saves and a 5.72 ERA. In 94.1 innings, he struck out 52, walked 37, and allowed 70 runs (60 earned) on 110 hits. Sanchez made his major league debut with Pittsburgh on August 26, 2007 and remained with them and its AAA team at Indianapolis through mid-season 2009. The Yankees picked him up and he pitched at AAA Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre and New York through the 2010 season. He went to Rakuten in Japan in 2011 and then returned to the states in 2012 at AAA Durham (Tampa Bay). Sanchez pitched last season with Tabasco in the Mexican League and was with the Dodgers in spring training this year.

Euvi Solano ('05-'06, UT) turns 32. The native of San Cristobal, D.R. signed with the Pirates as an international free agent in 2004. He appeared in one game in 2005 and in 37 during 2006 before his release. He batted .231 with five doubles, one triple, one homer and 10 RBI. Solano spilt the 2007 season in Can-Am League (ind.) teams at Worcester and Sussex.
