On a cool Friday night at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio the Cutters opened a 3-game series with Mahoning Valley with a come from behind 4-1 win.
Williamsport jumped on Scrappers starting pitcher Tim Maronde who has spent parts of the last three seasons in the big leagues for a run in the top of the first inning.
With one out Jiandido Tromp and Wilmer Oberto hit back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Derek Campbell singled to left field and Tromp scored to put the Cutters in front 1-0.
Jose Pujols in his first at-bat as a Crosscutter struck out swinging to end the inning.
Maronde would finish the night retiring the last ten batters he faced in a no decision.
Mahoning Valley drew even in the bottom of the fourth inning after Scrappers catcher Francisco Mejia was ejected by home plate umpire Anthony Perez for drawing a line in the dirt near home plate. Martin Cervenka replaced Mejia and grounded out to shortstop. After Leo Castillo grounded out to second Taylor Murphy singled to left field. D'vone McClure tripled over the head of center fielder Jiandido Tromp and Murphy scored to tie the game at 1-1.
That run was the only blemish on the night for Cutters starter David Whitehead (4-3) who pitched well in front of his family and friends in the stands. His final line was five innings, six hits an earned run and a strikeout.
Williamsport reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning off Scrappers reliever Anthony Vizcaya (1-6). Cord Sandberg and Jiandido Tromp singled to snap a streak of 13 straight Cutters being retired by the Scrappers pitching staff. Three batters later and with two outs, Derek Campbell delivered his league leading 18th double down the right field line that scored Sandberg to put the Cutters in front 2-1.
Jose Pujols doubled to left field scoring Tromp and Campbell to put the Cutters in front for good at 4-1. Pujojs picked up his first hit and RBI's as a Crosscutter in his debut.
The Cutters bullpen went into shutdown mode as RHP's Bryan Sova, Ricky Bielski pitched two scoreless innings and Edubray Ramos pitched the two innings retiring the final six batters for his second save.
With the win the Cutters now lead the season series with Mahoning Valley (4-2) and continue the 3-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. ahead of the 2-day NYPL All-Star break. The Cutters (28-33) have now won back-to-back games.
