WILLIAMSPORT - Looking to make a late post-season run, the Cutters completed a two-game sweep of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers with a 4-2 win.
Mahoning Valley ended the dream of back-to-back no-hitters in the 2nd inning when Paul Hendrix drove an RBI double to deep left-center field to plate Nellie Rodriguez to give the Scrappers a 1-0 lead. It was Hendrix 7th double and 10th RBI on the year.
Williamsport would tie the game in the bottom half of the 3rd inning when Dylan Cozens was hit by a Kenny Mathews offering with the bases loaded. Justin Parr scored from 3rd base to make it 1-1. Cozens would be credited with the RBI on the play, his 26th of the season.
Andrew Pullin would give the Cutters their first lead of the night in the bottom half of the 4th inning when he doubled to right center to plate Gustavo Martinez and make it 2-1. Justin Parr was retired at the plate on the play. For Pullin, it was his 10th double and 16th RBI on the season.
Jonathan Musser replaced Julio Reyes in the 5th inning. Reyes allowed one run, earned, on two hits in four innings of work. Reyes walked three while striking out three.
Mahoning Valley would tie the game against Musser when Claudio Bautista tripled to right centerfield passed a diving Gustavo Martinez to plate Joel Majia from 1st base and make it 2-2.
Scrappers starter Kenny Mathews was replaced by Alexis Paredes . Mathews allowed two runs, both earned, on four hits. Mathews struck out three and walked two in his four innings of work.
Musser would be replaced in the 8th inning by Felix Santos. Musser allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work. Musser would not factor in the decision.
Paredes would be replaced in the 8th inning by Briely Puerta. Paredes worked three scoreless innings while striking out three Cutters and walking one.
Williamsport would benefit from two errors committed by the Scrappers in the 8th inning. The Cutters took a 3-2 lead when catcher Martin Cervenka threw a ball into center field trying to throw out Dylan Cozens trying to steal 2nd base. The error allowed Zach Green to score from 3rd base. On the play Cozens took 3rd base on an error by center fielder Joel Mejia. Cozens would score on a single by Gustavo Martinez make it 4-2. For Martinez it was his 6th RBI.
Felix Santos worked two scoreless, hitless innings to earn the win, his 2nd of the season, in a 4-2 Cutters win.
