Sunday night at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio the Cutters took the final game of a 3-game series with Mahoning Valley 3-1.
Rhys Hoskins drove in the Cutters first run in the top of the first inning with a ground ball to shortstop that scored Jiandido Tromp making it 1-0.
Derek Campbell led off the fourth inning with his league leading 19th double and scored three batters later on a Chase Harris RBI single to put the Crosscutters in front for good at 2-1.
Campbell plated Cord Sandberg who reached on an error in the top of the eighth inning to give the Cutters a 3-1 lead.
Cutters starting pitcher Brandon Leibrandt (2-2) battled command issues through five innings, but allowed only one run on five hits, a walk while striking out five.
The Cutters bullpen which has been solid all season long put up another four shutout innings on the night. Matt Hockenberry gave up two hits and Calvin Rayburn notched his eighth save by getting the final six outs.
The Cutters are now off until Wednesday for the NYPL All-Star Game in Brooklyn to be played on Tuesday night.
With the win the Cutters (29-34) now lead the season series with Mahoning Valley (5-3) and cannot lost the series even if the Scrappers win both games in Williamsport this week.
The Cutters are now off for the 2-day NYPL All-Star break and return home Wednesday, August 20, 2014 to face Mahoning Valley at 7:05 p.m.
