Norwich, CT - The Tri-City ValleyCats (10-7) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (8-9) by a score of 6-4 Sunday evening at Dodd Stadium. Errors haunted the Tigers defensively in the game. The Tigers committed three of their four errors in a four run fifth inning that saw the Tigers 4-0 lead quickly evaporate into a tie score at 4-4. The ValleyCats grabbed a key contribution from 1B A.J. Reed (2-4) as he produced two hits in the game along with three RBI's.
The go ahead run came in the top of the sixth inning from LF Ryan Bottger (1-4) as he hit an RBI groundout that scored 2B Nick Tanielu (2-4) to give the ValleyCats their first lead of the game at 5-4. Bottger put together a two RBI performance in the win for the ValleyCats. LHP Bryan Radziewski (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Radziewski was the third pitcher used for the ValleyCats as he pitched three shutout innings and did not give up a hit. RHP Chris Munnelly (S, 4) picked up his fourth save of the season and his second of the three-game series with Connecticut as he pitched a perfect ninth inning.
The Tigers offense started off hot after a four run third inning in which CF Ross Kivett (2-5) hit a two-run single to give the Tigers the early 2-0 lead. Tigers added two more in the inning after RBI singles from DH Ben Verlander (2-4) and C Franklin Navarro (1-4). After the third inning the offense went cold. The ValleyCats pitching retired 17 of the last 20 batters faced. After a two homerun, eight RBI performance on Saturday night, RF Michael Gerber (1-4) cooled off on Sunday. Gerber picked up a double in his third at bat which was his only hit of the game.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, July 1st as they head out to Lowell, MA to take on the Lowell Spinners in a three-game series. Tigers RHP Fernando Perez (1-0, 3.68) gets the start in game one of the series. Lowell has yet to announce their starter for the first game.
