Norwich, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (8-8) defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats (9-7) by a score of 10-2 Saturday night at Dodd Stadium. RF Michael Gerber (4-5) put on a show Saturday night and arguably had one of the best offensive performances in Dodd Stadium history. Gerber had four hits that included four extra base hits, two homeruns, eight RBI's, and four runs scored. In the eighth inning Gerber almost hit a third homerun, but it hit off of the right field wall. For the third time this week Gerber fell one hit shy of the cycle.
Lost in the performance from Gerber was RHP Chase Edwards (2-1). Edwards picked up his second win of the season as he pitched eight innings while allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out three batters. Edwards retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced. His eight innings pitched was a career high and a season high for a Tigers starting pitcher this season. Edwards has now won back to back starts.
After dropping game one by a score of 7-5, the Tigers came right back on Saturday night. It was the offensive display from Gerber that set the tone of the game tonight for the Tigers. SS Garrett Mattlage (2-2) put together a great night. Mattlage produced two singles in the game along with three walks and three runs scored. CF Ross Kivett (2-5) chipped in with two singles and three runs scored.
In the series finale, Tigers RHP Spencer Turnbull (0-0, 0.00) is slated to face ValleyCats RHP Joe Musgrove (1-1, 3.95). Tomorrow evening is Sunday Funday: Kids Run the Bases & Have a Catch!
