Five Jersey Auctions, Hat Auction Highlight 2013 Theme Nights

Coasters, Christmas, and Hockey Jerseys are just some of the themes for the 2013 jersey auctions
February 27, 2013

CURVE, Pa. - Fans will get to experience some different looks from the Curve on the field in 2013 with the team hosting five separate jersey auction nights as well as a hat auction all while helping raise funds for local charitable organizations.  In addition to the auctions, the team returns nights like "Kids Run the Park" and a "Curve, Pa. Blue Out Saturday" event while also adding new items like "Christmas in July Weekend" and a "Case of the Mondays" Night.

This season will include a record five Jersey-off-the-Back auctions with varying themes.  The first auction on the schedule is an Altoona Coasters jersey on June 6's "What if We Were the Coasters" Night, which follows up last season's "What if We Were the Lake Monsters" event.  Coasters was also one of the finalists for the team moniker in 1998 before Curve was ultimately selected.  A limited amount of Coasters merchandise will be available in the team store throughout the game as well.

Altoona will host a Christmas in July Weekend in 2013 that will be stretched over July 20-21 when Erie checks in to Curve, Pa.  The game on July 20 features an Altoona Curve Shelf Elf giveaway that will be handed out to the first 1,000 fans thanks to Ravine Ink & Thread.  On July 21, the team will don Christmas-inspired jerseys for the second jersey auction of the season thanks to the folks at Reliable Towing Tire and Auto Center.  Proceeds from the auction will benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Coinciding with the Christmas in July weekend events will be the second-annual Yard Sale, taking place prior to the game on July 20.  The event, which takes place in the parking lot at the ballpark, offers fans a place to sell some things just lying around the house or that are taking up space in the garage.  The Yard Sale will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and you can set up a space to sell whatever you like for a small $20 donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Tables and extra spaces will be available as well for an additional donation.  Best of all, you keep all profits from whatever you sell.

Returning for one night in 2013 will be our Curve, PA Blue Out Saturday theme, which is slated for August 3.  As in 2012, the team will once again wear special blue jersey tops to helps raise awareness and funds for Prevent Child Abuse Pennsylvania.  In addition to the in-game auction, there will be other ways that fans attending can donate to help aid Prevent Child Abuse Pennsylvania.

One of the most memorable nights of the 2013 season is sure to be Arts & Baseball Night on August 11.  The night will feature an arts-themed jersey that will be worn by the team and auctioned off throughout the game to benefit the Altoona Symphony Orchestra.  A pregame, on-field performance by the symphony will be cap off an afternoon's worth of arts activities at Peoples Natural Gas Field and lead into the 6 p.m. game between the Curve and Harrisburg.

It will be a hockey night in Altoona for the fifth and final jersey auction taking place on August 19 as the Curve will wear a hockey-inspired jersey for the second straight season.  The hockey jersey night will go hand-in-hand with an appearance by a Pittsburgh Penguins player, which will be announced later.

Fans will have the opportunity to once again bid on some game-used headwear to go with their jerseys in 2013 with a hat-off-the-head auction on July 4.  Curve players will be sporting special patriotic hats in honor of Independence Day.  The hats will be up for auction throughout the game benefitting Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.

As announced last week, Curve will celebrate the life of Robert "Bo" Forney by holding BOpening Night on Thursday, April 11 when they open the home portion of the 2013 schedule at 6:30 p.m. versus the Harrisburg Senators.  Forney, who passed away at the age of 21 on February 4, had been the team's bat boy since the 2008 season and developed many strong friendships with staff members as well as former Curve players and current Pirates stars.

A silent auction will take place during BOpening Night with all proceeds from the auction benefitting the American Heart Association.  The auction will consist of game-used items from the Pirates-Curve Exhibition game and will include, in addition to other items, 14-game used jerseys that have been signed by former Curve players /current Pirates players.

Back again, for an encore performance this season is Kids Run the Park Night on July 31.  This night will give selected members of the free Galliker's Curve Kids' Club the opportunity to work at Peoples Natural Gas Field.  Kids will be involved in everything from PA announcing and radio broadcasting to handing out programs and ticket taking.  The Galliker's Curve Kids' Club features 10 free games plus loads of other fun game-day and non-game day events for kids 12 and under.  Area youth can sign up online at AltoonaCurve.com anytime or this weekend at Baseball Bash.

A welcome addition to theme calendar in 2013 will be Case of the Mondays Night on April 29 when the Akron Aeros stop in for a visit.  If you didn't guess it by the name, the night will pay tribute to one of the greatest workplace comedies of all time in the Mike Judge film Office Space.  The film was released the same year the Curve started playing baseball in Altoona and we felt it was only appropriate that we celebrate its awesomeness as well.

While some of the details are still being ironed out over staff lunches at Chotchkie's (not Flingers), the Curve do know that the night will be filled with Michael Bolton music, Hawaiian shirts and jeans (if you want to) and hopefully a fax machine to take out a little workplace frustration.  The Curve wouldn't want to jump to too many conclusions just yet until all the details have been finalized.

Rounding out the Curve's theme and community nights this year will be Community Collection Days.  This year's Community Collection Days are May 10 (Computer Recycling for Skills of Central, PA., Inc.), May 26 (Pet Food for Central PA Humane Society), and September 1 (Food Drive for St. Vincent De Paul Society Soup Kitchen).
