DANVILLE, Va. - In its sixth extra-inning contest of the season, the Danville Braves were outlasted in 10 innings against the Johnson City Cardinals, 5-3, on Saturday night at Legion Field.

In the top of the 10th, Danville (15-15) gave up two runs, including one run unearned due to the new MiLB rule of a player starting at second base. With one out, the Cardinals' Carlos Soto Jr singled, moving the runner to third. The next batter, Kevin Woodall Jr. lined a ball to deep left, scoring Soto Jr. and giving the Cards a 4-3 lead. Leandro Cedeno singled to left, tacking on another run on the board for Johnson City, 5-3.
Danville loaded the bases in the 10th with a single and a walk, but the Braves couldn't make the most of their opportunity. Overall on the evening, Danville went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
However, the D-Braves did break open with two leads throughout the game. In the first inning, Danville opened the scoring with a Justin Dean single. While Dean was at first, a wild pickoff throw from Johnson City pitcher Tommy Parsons moved Dean to third. Two batters later, Brett Langhorne knocked Dean in with an RBI groundout, handing Danville a 1-0 lead.
After Johnson City scored two in the top of the fourth, Danville came back with a pair of their own.
The Braves opened the inning with a pair of singles, and with one out, Luis Mejia smacked his fourth double of the year, scoring Ricardo Rodriguez and knotting the game at 2-2.
One batter later, Nick Shumpert lodged a sac fly to left field, scoring Nick Vizcaino and giving Danville the 3-2 lead.
Dilmer Mejia made his shortest outing of the year, but struck out seven Cardinals. In 3.2 innings of work, the El Sauce, Nicaragua native allowed two earned runs and three walks over 90 pitches.
Danville will host game No. 2 of its three-game set tomorrow with the Johnson City Cardinals. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
