Beck's dominant outing propels Winston-Salem

Righty tosses six scoreless for first High-A win
April 13, 2013

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (April 13, 2013) - Powered by Chris Beck's first career High-A win and timely hitting in the middle innings, Winston-Salem earned its first home victory of the season 4-1 over the Carolina Mudcats in front of 6,911 fans at BB&T Ballpark Saturday night.

Beck (1-1) tossed six scoreless innings for the Dash's first quality start of the season. The former second-round pick scattered five hits and whiffed six. The Mudcats threatened in every inning but the sixth against Beck, but he stranded eight runners in the victorious effort.

The Dash (4-4) also struggled to take advantage of scoring chances in the early innings, but they broke out in the fourth frame. Mark Haddow led off with a double and scored two batters later on a Grant Buckner fielder's choice. Buckner came around on a Chris Curley triple to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 edge.

Winston also mustered a single tally in the fifth and sixth innings. Haddow, who extended his hitting streak to seven games, drove in Courtney Hawkins with a double, and Curley capped the Dash's scoring with a solo shot, his third of the campaign.

Carolina (5-3) could not figure out Beck and the bullpen trio of Jason Van Skike, Jarrett Casey and Cody Winiarski.

Van Skike, who was promoted to Winston-Salem from Low-A Kannapolis, allowed the Mudcats' only run in an inning and two-thirds. Casey retired the only man he faced to end the eighth inning, while Winiarski twirled a perfect ninth for his third save.

Winston-Salem and Carolina will meet in a rubber match Sunday at 2 p.m., and the Dash will look to avoid a series loss to Cleveland's Carolina League affiliate for the first time since August 28-31, 2007. At BB&T Ballpark, Winston-Salem is 28-6 against the Mudcats and the Kinston Indians, the former Indians' High-A club.

The Dash will send Terance Marin (0-0, 4.15 ERA) to the mound for his second career minor league start. He will oppose fellow right-hander Will Roberts (0-1, 10.50 ERA). Pregame coverage begins on wsdash.com at 1:45 p.m.

Tickets are still available for the final game of Opening Weekend 2013 on Sunday afternoon. Visit wsdash.com for your tickets for the finale between Winston-Salem and Carolina.
