Dash stop scoring drought, blank Blue Rocks

Wilmington, Del. (April 13, 2014) - The Dash followed consecutive shutout losses with a shutout victory of their own. Winston-Salem held the Wilmington Blue Rocks to three hits in its 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium.

Winston-Salem (4-6) was mired in the longest scoreless streak of the Dash era, a 23-inning drought that dated back to Thursday's one-run loss in Salem. However, the Dash finally snapped that funk with the game's only run in the third.

Nick Basto led off the inning with a sharp single, and Tim Anderson brought him home with a double down the left field line for his third RBI of the season. As a result, the Dash mustered the game's first run for just the second time in 10 contests this year.

Winston-Salem starter Mike Recchia (1-1) made sure that one run was enough. Recchia held the Blue Rocks off the board in five and two-thirds innings of work. He fanned seven and surrendered just two hits for his second career High-A win.

His defense helped in the Blue Rocks' two scoring chances during his outing. With two outs and Beau Maggi at first, Raul A. Mondesi laced a double down the right field line. However, the Dash gunned down Maggi at the plate, right fielder Jason Coats to second baseman Michael Johnson to catcher Martin Medina.

In the sixth inning, the Blue Rocks loaded the bases with two outs, and Euclides Leyer replaced Recchia. Johermyn Chavez hit a dribbler down the chalk at third, and Basto made a bare-handed scoop and threw out Chavez by a step to preserve the lead.

Leyer followed that escape with two more perfect innings, during which he whiffed three Blue Rocks. The righty entered for the ninth inning and struck out Bubba Starling before plunking Hunter Dozier and allowing a single to Chavez.

With men at first and second and one away, Jarrett Casey took Leyer's place on the hill, and he induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Cody Stubbs for his second save of the season.

Winston-Salem concludes this seven-game road trip Monday night at 6:35 inside Frawley Stadium. Right-hander J.B. Wendelken (1-1, 3.27 ERA), who took a perfect game into the fifth inning in his last start Wednesday, will toe the rubber for the Dash against southpaw Sean Manaea (0-1, 8.10 ERA).
