KINSTON, N.C. (April 12, 2017) - The Down East Wood Ducks used a four-run first inning and a strong start from Joe Palumbo to win 6-1 and claim the rubber match of a three-game set against the Dash on Wednesday afternoon at Grainger Stadium.

After posting its best offensive performance on Tuesday, Winston-Salem (1-6) managed just three hits against the Woodies pitching staff. The left-hander Palumbo (1-0) dazzled, allowing just three hits and one unearned run in six innings. He also struck out a career-high 11 batters. Omarlin Lopez worked a scoreless seventh before Austin Pettibone closed out the game by facing the minimum in the eighth and ninth.

Down East (5-2) kickstarted the scoring with a two-out rally in the first inning against Dash starter Zach Thompson (0-1). After an Eduard Pinto single, Jairo Beras roped an RBI double to give Down East the early advantage. Following an error by Brady Conlan that allowed Josh Altmann to reach base, Michael O'Neill smacked a three-run homer to put the Wood Ducks up 4-0.

Arturo Lara provided the last run off Thompson with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the second. In the next frame, the Dash righty had runners on second and third with nobody out, but he worked out of trouble unscathed by inducing a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts. Thompson finished his outing by going three innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Down East added its final run on a sacrifice fly by Luis Mendez in the 5th inning.

The Dash broke the shutout in the sixth inning with an unearned run. After Daniel Gonzalez reached on a fielding error by Lara, Alex Call smoked an RBI triple to make it a 6-1 contest. Call recorded six hits in the Dash's three games at Grainger Stadium.

Dash reliever Yelmison Peralta pitched well out of the bullpen in his second outing of the season, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings. Left-hander Louie Lechich followed with a perfect eighth, giving him 17.1 innings of professional work without allowing an earned run.
