Odom, Hillcats send Winston to winless trip

LYNCHBURG, Va. (Aug. 10, 2014) - Joe Odom's walk-off single with two outs in the ninth inning propelled the Lynchburg Hillcats to a 2-1, sweep-clinching victory over the Dash on Sunday night at Calvin Falwell Field.

Before this six-game swing to Potomac and Lynchburg, Winston-Salem (24-26, 54-65) had never finished a multi-stop road trip without a victory during the Dash era (2009-present). However, Winston suffered the franchise's first winless two-city trip for the first time since April 25-30, 2008, the club's last season as the Warthogs.

Dash reliever Ben Brewster (0-1) had retired the first five he faced, but Tyler Tewell prolonged the ninth inning by sneaking a double down the line in left with two outs. After Brewster plunked Emerson Landoni, Joe Odom laced a game-winning single up the middle, which clinched the Hillcats' 10th walk-off triumph of the season.

The Hillcats (26-23, 60-59), whom the Dash swept in Winston-Salem last weekend, won eight of their 10 regular season meetings with Winston-Salem in Virginia. However, the Dash are still a half-game up on Carolina for the Southern Division's final playoff spot with 20 contests remaining in the second half.

For the fourth consecutive game, Winston-Salem plated the game's first run thanks to Jason Coats' RBI single in the fourth. With that knock, Coats jumped into sole possession of second place in the Carolina League with 72 RBIs, one shy of Myrtle Beach's Jorge Alfaro.

Lynchburg knotted the score in the sixth when Justin Bloxom grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and nobody out.

This would be the only tally charged to Dash starter J.B. Wendelken, who matched a career high with seven strong innings of work. The reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week permitted five hits and struck out five in a no decision.

Hillcats hurler Jarett Miller also recorded a quality start, holding the Dash to one run over six innings. Mauricio Cabrera and Brady Feigl (2-1) combined to retire nine in a row behind Miller.

After an off day on Monday, the Dash kick off a three-game series against these Hillcats on Tuesday night at 7 at BB&T Ballpark. Righty James Dykstra (2-1, 4.80 ERA) goes for the Dash, while Lynchburg counters with southpaw Blair Walters (3-0, 2.74 ERA), who pitched for Winston-Salem in 2012.
