Dayton, Ohio-The South Bend Cubs scored three runs in the fourth inning and held off a Dayton comeback bid as they defeated the Dragons 3-2 on Friday night. A crowd of 7,900 attended the game at Fifth Third Field. The Cubs have won the first two games of the series, by identical scores, to open the second half.
Dragons starting pitcher Hunter Greene worked a career-high six and two-thirds innings and was outstanding with the exception of the one bad inning, when he allowed three extra base hits. Greene (1-5) topped out at 101 mph with his fastball, striking out seven without allowing a walk. He gave up five hits on the night and surrendered three runs (two earned) to suffer the loss.
The Cubs collected three extra base hits in the fourth and took advantage of a Dayton error in the inning as they built a 3-0 lead. The Dragons scored both of their runs in the fifth when Alejo Lopez walked with one out and went to second on a two-out single by Mitch Piatnik. Jeter Downs followed with a line drive hit to left-center. Lopez scored on the hit, and Piatnik also scored when the throw to third hit the runner and bounced away to make it 3-2.

The Dragons nearly tied the game in the eighth inning. Downs led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice by J.D. Williams. Andy Sugilio followed with a fly ball to center field that was caught by Brandon Hughes as Downs tagged and tried to score, but the throw home by Hughes was in time to get Downs and end the inning. The Dragons were retired in order in the ninth.
The Dragons finished with eight hits. Downs and John Sansone each had two.
