Dayton, Ohio-Four South Bend pitchers combined to scatter nine hits as the Cubs topped the Dayton Dragons 5-2 on Saturday night before a crowd of 8,023 at Fifth Third Field. The Cubs have won the first three games in the series to start the second half. The set will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
South Bend took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning before Dayton's Jeter Downs tied the game in the third on a solo home run to left field. The homer was the ninth of the year for Downs.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth when South Bend scored twice, getting a run-scoring double from Michael Cruz and an RBI single from Brandon Hughes to take a 3-1 lead.
The Dragons scored in the bottom of the sixth when Andy Sugilio doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Mark Kolozsvary's single to make it 3-2.
But the Dragons could not score the remainder of the night as South Bend added single runs in the seventh and ninth innings to hand the Dragons their seventh straight loss.

Dragons starting pitcher Tyler Mondile (2-6) pitched well over the first five innings, allowing just one run, before South Bend got to him for a pair of runs in the sixth. Mondile went five and one-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Dragons nine-hit attack was led by Sugilio, who had two hits including a double and a run scored. Leandro Santana and Raul Wallace also added two hits each.
