Dayton, Ohio-Dayton's Jose Garcia delivered a two-run single to break a 3-3 tie with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 5-3 on Saturday night. A crowd of 8,447 saw the Dragons earn their second straight win.
Four Dragons pitchers combined to scatter eight hits and avoid any big innings. Cory Thompson (2-1), the third Dayton pitcher of the night, worked two scoreless innings to earn the victory. John Ghyzel pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save.
Great Lakes opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the fifth inning before the Dragons took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Stuart Fairchild and Montrell Marshall delivered back-to-back run-scoring triples to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. Great Lakes scored two runs in the sixth to regain the lead at 3-2.
Dayton tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Andy Sugilio lined a single to right field to bring in Garcia from second base with two outs and make it 3-3. Then in the seventh, the Dragons took the lead for good. They loaded the bases with no one out on a pair of walks and a single by Marshall. The next two batters popped out without advancing a runner, but Garcia hit a ground ball into right field to drive in two and give the Dragons a 5-3 lead.
Dragons starting pitcher Andrew Jordan worked five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Ryan Nutof allowed one run in one inning before giving way to Thompson.
The Dragons finished with seven hits and also drew 10 walks. Sugilio and Marshall each had two hits.
